Good neighbours, great nights and a Friday in pajamas

October 16–23, 2026 · Coast 101.1

There’s more than one way to make a little good happen this week. You could take the family to an afternoon of fun in Carbonear, enjoy live music in Clarenville, discover a new film in St. John’s, or gather your co-workers for a Friday with a very relaxed dress code. This edition of The Coastline takes you right through Friday, October 23, with ideas for getting out, giving back and enjoying the people and places around us. Put a favourite event on your calendar, invite a friend and take Coast along for the ride.

Carbonear: a little fall fun, a very good cause

Powell’s is bringing back Fall Fun for a Wish, partnering with Make-A-Wish Canada to help grant a wish for a child in the Conception Bay North area. The announced activities include games, bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting and prizes.

Bring your toonies and make an afternoon of it. It’s a chance to enjoy some family time while supporting a local business’s community effort. Check the event notice on Coast’s website and Powell’s updates before heading out.

Clarenville’s Sunday soundtrack goes country

St. John’s welcomes a world of film

Beginning Tuesday, October 20 · St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival

The festival’s 37th edition brings local and international films, artist conversations and industry gatherings to the city from October 20 to 24. For this Coastline week, that means plenty to explore from Tuesday through next Friday.

It’s a good opportunity to celebrate the people building Newfoundland and Labrador’s screen industry while discovering storytellers from elsewhere. Browse the festival website and film listings to choose a screening that suits you. Selected films are also offered online across the province; check each listing for viewing details and availability.

Thursday, October 22 · Arrive 6:15 p.m.; walk 7 p.m. · Bannerman Park, St. John’s

St. John’s first Royal LePage Shelter Foundation Night Light Walk, presented by TD and hosted locally by Royal LePage Atlantic Homestead, invites neighbours to take a three-kilometre lantern-lit walk in support of Iris Kirby House.

Next Friday: put your PJs to work

Friday, October 23 · Jamarama

The Janeway Foundation’s 15th annual Jamarama is an invitation to turn a comfortable outfit into community support. Workplaces, schools and daycares can register, organize fundraising and wear their pyjamas for the day.

If your team wants to participate, this is the week to make a plan: choose someone to coordinate, share the donation information and invite everyone to take part. The foundation supports children’s care through equipment, research, staff education and pediatric programs. Find the current Jamarama registration link through the Janeway Foundation’s campaign calendar.

Charity spotlight: Beagle Paws, close to home

With roots in St. John’s and work that reaches across Canada, Beagle Paws Rescue offers several ways to get involved, including volunteering, fostering, adopting and donating. Its thrift store provides another everyday way to support the organization.

This weekend, Coast’s community listing announces an eighth-anniversary sale at 36 Pearson Street, St. John’s, on Saturday, October 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with merchandise listed at 50 per cent off for that day. See the sale notice, or visit Beagle Paws to explore longer-term ways to help.

Music check-in: something new from Bryan Adams

A familiar Canadian voice has something fresh to share. Bryan Adams released How’s It Goin’ on October 9, with a song that takes a musical trip across Canada. His official site also announced intimate UK solo shows featuring acoustic songs, audience questions and a preview of music from the forthcoming album.

That’s a nice reminder that the artists behind familiar favourites are still creating new memories. Find the single announcement and the UK show news on his official website. Which Bryan Adams song takes you straight back to a particular time or place?

Keep the good local news coming. Coast’s Community Matters shares notices for charities and registered nonprofit groups. Send your event’s date, time, location and participation details to onair@coast1011.com. From St. John’s and the Avalon to Clarenville and surrounding communities, we love hearing what our neighbours are making happen.
