Items we cannot accept for Community Matters include:
-For profit events
-Private fundraising events by/for individuals without board/community group oversight (online auctions/fundraising posts like GoFundMe, family organized fundraising events)
-Straight lottery/gaming events (Bingo, Chase The Ace, Poker) where the only or main reason to attend is participation in the lottery/gaming
-Events with a gaming element as a part of the program (ie: 50-50 draw at the dinner/dance) and not the sole reason to attend may be accepted.

The Canadian Red Cross is in need of volunteers to support their Emergency Management Program, the Canadian Red Cross assist families that are displaced from their homes in the event of a fire or other disaster. Memorial University and Champney’s West Aquarium, with financial support from the United Way of Newfoundland and Labrador, are hosting Memorial student led workshops at the Champney’s West Aquarium (Bonavista Peninsula) in July for children to learn about the rock we live on, the ocean that surrounds us and what lives within that ocean.
Memorial students will host four fun and interactive workshops:
16th July – Splash into the North Atlantic! Learn how to keep the ocean clean, how aquatic creatures survive the cold waters of the north Atlantic and how fog is formed and participate in fog in a jar experiment!
23rd July – What’s eating ya? Ever wonder how sea creatures get their food? Or who eats who in the ocean? What about species that cause more harm than good? Learn all about marine food webs and the different roles that animals have!
30th July – Survival of the Fishiest – discover the incredible journeys fish make throughout their lifecycles! Learn about iconic Newfoundland species such as the Atlantic salmon and American eel, and explore the challenges they face during migration.
The workshops are free, run from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and adults don’t have to stay. Registration is advised. Contact Catherine at cwcdo8@gmail.com to register.

A Benefit concert called “Ignite and Unite” featuring Petrina Bromley, Shelley Neville and Peter Halley is happening Monday, July 27th in Trinity at Riding Tide Theatre.
The fundraiser is for a new fire truck and to honor a fallen volunteer firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty exactly four years ago, Lieutenant David Marlow.

Prince of Wales Collegiate graduating class of 1981 is celebrating their 45th reunion on Friday August 7, 2026 at the Elks Club, 19 Carpasian Rd, St. John’s. On Sunday, August 9th, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Goulds Lions Club, in partnership with the Goulds Volunteer Fire Department, will host the 7th Annual Justin Blundon Memorial Car Wash in the parking lot in front of St. Kevin’s Junior High School on Main Road in Goulds.
All proceeds raised by the Goulds Lions Club and Goulds Leo Club will support local community projects, with the recipients to be announced following the fundraiser.
